From September 17 to 25, 2025, Lignano Sabbiadoro will host the continent’s top para-football competition: the European Powerchair Football Championships, taking place at the Bella Italia Efa Village and the Municipal Sports Hall. Ten national teams will compete for the European crown, with the top five also securing a spot at the World Cup scheduled in Argentina.
The tournament is organized by the Italian Paralympic Federation of Powerchair Sport (FIPPS), in collaboration with the Italian Paralympic Committee and the Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. Around 80 athletes will participate, supported by nearly 300 staff members, referees, coaches, medical professionals, and volunteers. The nations represented are: Italy, France, Ireland, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Denmark, and defending champions England.
Players compete using specially designed powerchairs, with each team consisting of four athletes (including the goalkeeper) and no gender distinctions. According to the rules, the ball – which measures 33 cm in diameter – can only be contested by one player from each team if they are within three meters of it.
All matches will be streamed live on the official FIPPS YouTube channel. Italy’s debut is set for Friday, September 19, at 6:30 p.m. against Denmark.
