The Friulian Epiphany celebration, featuring the evocative lighting of the foghera and the arrival of the Befana in Lignano Sabbiadoro, is one of the most anticipated winter events – an unmissable occasion filled with fun, music, and tradition!
On Monday, January 5th, 2026, from 5:30 PM, we look forward to welcoming you for an enjoyable afternoon together with the Alpini Group of Lignano Sabbiadoro, where you can also taste the traditional pinza, the typical Epiphany cake. At Beach Office No. 7, near the famous sand nativity scene, the Befana will arrive from the sea, ready to hand out sweets and candies to children gathered around the large straw structure that will later be set on fire.
Right afterwards, the lighting of the great foghera (or pignarûl in Friulian) will take place. According to tradition, the direction of the smoke reveals what the new year will bring. An ancient Friulian proverb says:
“Se il fum al va a soreli a mont, cjape il sac e va pal mont; se il fum al va de bande di soreli jevât, cjape il sac e va al marcjât.”
Meaning: “If the smoke drifts west, take your bag and travel the world; if it drifts east, take your bag and head to the market.”
A special thanks goes to the Alpini Group and Pro Loco Lignano for their support in keeping this authentic tradition alive.
Don’t miss this magical festive night: come and welcome the Befana in Lignano and take part in the ancient fire ritual that warms the heart and brings good wishes for 2026!
